Satyajit Ray's 1955 first film, the childhood of the boy Apu in a poor Bengali village, shot on location with a largely amateur cast and scored by Ravi Shankar. Its prize at Cannes in 1956 announced Indian art cinema to the world and began the Apu Trilogy.
