Indian director from Kolkata whose first film, Pather Panchali in 1955, brought Indian art cinema to world attention and began the Apu Trilogy. Working with small crews and often composing his own scores, Ray built a humanist body of work that stands with the greatest in the medium, honored with an Academy Award for lifetime achievement in 1992.
