A camera that captures images with an electronic sensor and digital storage instead of photographic film, letting an image be viewed immediately and copied or transmitted without chemical processing. Steven Sasson, an engineer at Eastman Kodak, built the first self-contained electronic still camera in 1975 using a monochrome Fairchild Semiconductor CCD sensor, decades before digital cameras displaced film in the consumer market.
