A 1958 Alfred Hitchcock psychological thriller notable as the first film to use the dolly zoom, an in-camera effect that distorts perspective to convey the protagonist's fear of heights and that the industry still calls the Vertigo effect. It received mixed reviews on release but was reassessed so dramatically over the following decades that it displaced Citizen Kane as the greatest film ever made in the 2012 Sight and Sound critics' poll, before settling into second place behind Kane again in the 2022 edition.
