A 1936 comedy Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed and starred in as his Little Tramp character, satirizing industrial mechanization and mass unemployment during the Great Depression. Chaplin kept the film almost entirely wordless nine years into the sound era because he feared giving the Tramp a voice would ruin the character's mystery and universal, silent appeal.
