Fritz Lang's 1927 German science fiction epic, a towering vertical city divided between the machine-worked underground and the pleasure gardens above, built around the workers' revolt led by Maria and her mechanical double. Its special effects, engineered by Eugen Schufftan using mirrors to place miniature sets inside live-action frames, gave the young genre of science fiction cinema its most influential visual vocabulary. Heavily cut on release and thought largely lost for decades, a damaged, nearly complete print found in Buenos Aires in 2008 restored most of Lang's original structure.
