I Love Lucy is an American television sitcom that premiered on October 15, 1951 and is often regarded as one of the most influential television programs in history. Its production pioneered filming with three 35 millimeter cameras simultaneously in front of a studio audience, a technique that became the standard method for filming most subsequent sitcoms shot in front of an audience. An unexpected consequence of shooting on film rather than broadcasting live was that its rebroadcasts proved to be ratings winners, effectively giving birth to the rerun and the profitable rerun syndication market that followed.
