Orson Welles's 1941 first feature, the life of a newspaper tycoon told in overlapping testimonies, made with cinematographer Gregg Toland's deep-focus photography, ceilinged sets, layered sound and a fractured chronology. It topped the Sight and Sound critics' poll of the greatest films for five consecutive decades and remains the standard case study of film form.
