The pocket-sized radio receiver built on transistors instead of vacuum tubes, first sold as the Regency TR-1 in 1954 and made a world product by Sony and other Japanese makers. It detached listening from the family living room, gave youth culture its portable soundtrack, and became one of the most manufactured consumer devices of its century.
