A technology that records the real-time movement of objects or performers into a computer system and maps that data onto a digital character model, letting a live performance drive computer animation. It grew out of photogrammetric motion analysis in biomechanics research during the 1970s and 1980s, reached video games by 1988, and became a mainstream technique in 3D fighting games such as Virtua Fighter by the mid-1990s.
