The liquid crystal display, or LCD, became the technology that replaced the cathode ray tube as the dominant television and computer screen technology. Its scientific basis traces to Friedrich Reinitzer's 1888 discovery of liquid crystalline properties, and Hoffmann-La Roche's 1970 patent on the twisted nematic field effect made practical LCD devices possible, followed by the first thin film transistor liquid crystal display in 1973. LCD television image quality surpassed cathode ray tube image quality in 2007, the same year LCD televisions first outsold CRT televisions worldwide, completing a transition that made the bulkier tube technology obsolete within a few more years.

The first operational LCD was based on the Dynamic Scattering Mode (DSM) and was introduced in 1968 by a group at RCA in the United States, headed by George Heilmeier.
