The replacement of photochemical film by digital capture, digital effects and digital projection, gathering through the 1990s and effectively complete in commercial exhibition by the mid-2010s. It collapsed the cost of shooting, made visual effects continuous with photography, and ended the shipping of film prints that had defined distribution for a century.
