The vacuum tube in which a steered electron beam paints an image on a phosphor screen, invented as a laboratory instrument by Karl Ferdinand Braun in 1897. As the picture tube it was the display of virtually every television set for the medium's first seventy years, and its scanning principle underlies electronic television itself.

Held Differently
W2XCW's 1928 broadcasts used mechanical (Nipkow disc-based) scanning, not the cathode-ray tube that would displace mechanical television in the 1930s; recorded as variant to show the technology this milestone predates, not the one it used.

Spacewar! (1962) and the arcade and home-console games that followed it through the 1970s and 1980s were displayed on cathode-ray tube screens; the CRT was the medium's dominant display technology for its first three decades.
