A nonprofit founded by Robert Redford in 1981 to discover and support independent artists in film, theater and music through labs, grants and mentorship, beginning with a Filmmakers Lab that first met that June, following the Academy Awards success of Redford's directorial debut Ordinary People. It also operates the Sundance Film Festival, which grew from 85 films at two Park City theaters in 1985 to 181 films across nine theaters drawing more than 71,000 attendees by January 2017.
