HBO, short for Home Box Office, launched at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time on November 8, 1972, becoming the first cable originated television content service and one of the oldest subscription television services in the United States still operating today. It pioneered the modern premium channel model: the first service transmitted and distributed directly to individual cable systems, sold to subscribers for an extra monthly fee, carrying programming without editing for objectionable material rather than being supported by advertising.
