William S. Paley bought a small radio chain in 1928 and rebuilt it into the Columbia Broadcasting System, whose news division, built around Edward R. Murrow's wartime reporting, gave American broadcast journalism much of its early standing. Under Paley's guidance CBS became one of the largest radio networks in the United States and, later, one of the three dominant American television networks.
