In September 1972, Magnavox began selling the Odyssey, the console Ralph Baer had developed as the Brown Box prototype at Sanders Associates, in North American stores. It was the first commercially available home video game console, opening a market that reached the United Kingdom in 1973 and continental Europe in 1974, and it directly inspired Atari's own arcade hit Pong the same year.
