ESPN began broadcasting on 7 September 1979 as the world's first all-sports, satellite-delivered cable television network, founded by Bill Rasmussen with his son Scott Rasmussen and Ed Eagan. It launched to 1.4 million cable subscribers with the debut of SportsCenter, and within a month Chris Berman had joined the network as an on-air fixture for decades to come.
