An American entrepreneur who co-founded Netflix, Inc. in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail rental service. Crediting YouTube's own rise for prompting his shift in strategy, Hastings led Netflix's launch of a video streaming service in 2007, and the company later commissioned House of Cards (2013), one of the first major original series released in a full-season binge format, moving Netflix from a distributor of others' content into a producer of its own.
