American journalist, born Elizabeth Cochran, who invented undercover investigative reporting for the mass press: her 1887 expose Ten Days in a Mad-House, written after feigning insanity to enter the Blackwell's Island asylum, forced reform of its conditions. In 1889 to 1890 she circled the world in 72 days for the New York World, beating Jules Verne's fictional record.
