French stage magician turned filmmaker who discovered that the camera could perform tricks the stage could not, and built cinema's first fantasy worlds in his Montreuil glass studio. His hand-tinted spectacles, above all A Trip to the Moon in 1902, made him the founder of special effects and narrative fantasy film.
