Alice Guy-Blache

French filmmaker, the first woman to direct films and among the first directors of any kind to build narrative fiction on screen, beginning at Gaumont in 1896. She ran production at Gaumont, then founded and ran the Solax studio in the United States, directing or producing hundreds of films that were largely written out of film history until scholarship recovered her in recent decades.
