A group of rehearsal techniques that encourage sincere, expressive performances by having an actor identify with and genuinely experience a character's inner motivation and emotions, rather than only its outward behavior. The techniques build on Konstantin Stanislavski's system from early-twentieth-century Russia, and the American version was developed and given the name 'the Method' by Lee Strasberg and the Group Theatre, which he co-founded in New York in 1931.
