The process by which editors, producers and other media personnel decide which information reaches the public, filtering countless potential stories down to the limited number that actually appear. Social psychologist Kurt Lewin proposed the gatekeeper model in 1943, and journalism scholar David Manning White applied it directly to news selection in 1950 by studying a single wire editor's reasons for rejecting stories.
