A period of rapid growth, technological development and cultural influence of arcade video games from the late 1970s to the early 1980s, most sources centering it on 1978 to 1983. Space Invaders (1978) is widely credited as the catalyst; the number of North American arcades roughly doubled between 1980 and 1982 before the North American video game market crash of 1983 ended the era.
