News gathering and reporting carried out by ordinary members of the public rather than professional journalists, often using internet platforms and social media to collect, analyze and distribute information about current events as they happen. The underlying debate over public participation in news-making traces to a 1920s exchange between Walter Lippmann and John Dewey, but the contemporary movement gained real momentum in the 1990s and 2000s as blogging and platforms such as Twitter and YouTube let individuals report breaking news in real time.
